In a million years, I never would have ever dreamed I would be writing a blog post about this one day–pinch me! I am a solo traveling Girl Camper and it’s opened my eyes and my life to a whole new world that I didn’t even know existed.
When Mr. P and I decided to start RVing together about 7 years ago, I was thrilled that we had a new hobby to do TOGETHER. Having married in our 30s and no children, we tend to be very independent and have to work hard to find similar interests to do as a couple. I was in hog heaven and planned and packed and cooked and smiled with delight. On our final “couples” trip, he sat inside the RV, air conditioner blasting, listening to the local country music station for hours (couldn’t pick up any TV stations) to prove his point–he was OVER it. He has acreage, woods, lake, boat, and all of his toys back at home–why does he need to drive several hours and leave all of those things behind simply to let Queen Bee play house? Exactly!
Me going solo was his idea and after one tearful conversation, I started embracing the possibilities. My heart went pitter patter with creativity and curiosity.
The Jamboree, pictured above, is my second solo rig. I have always driven Class C motorhomes. I feel like a BOSS. I have discovered so many things about myself along this journey. Some of it has been smooth, some of it not. Have seen things and met amazing people. All of this because Mr. P discovered he didn’t enjoy the activity then encouraged me to continue to pursue it. And I said YES.
My short list of why I love solo RVing:
1. I feel empowered! I love the planning, organizing, driving that beast, getting set up, taking care of issues, and the curious glances I imagine I am getting when other campers realize I am a solo female RVer.
2. Tiny house living – I love keeping it spic and span. I love cooking and relaxing in there. It’s truly “playing house” for adults.
3. Waking up with no chores or work or errands or anything on the schedule – just me and whatever my heart fancies and nobody to check in with.
4. Quiet time – yoga and meditation. Catching up on reading. It’s divine!
5. Cooking for myself – I love entertaining, don’t get me wrong. And, I equally love prepping and eating a little meal all by myself.
6. Meeting people – I belong to some female camping groups and have made the most amazing new friends whom I camp with regularly. It’s instant camaraderie.
7. Giving permission to others – specifically women, to explore the idea of doing it for themselves!
I love this life so much, I began exploring possible careers in the industry right away. That’s what led me to becoming an RV Inspector. So, next time the world deals you a hand that you were not expecting, step back, breathe, and allow. You never know where it might lead you!
