My friends and family know that I am the Seeker…..always looking for something fun or interesting to do that will tickle my right brain. Mr. Puckett is the polar opposite and that is the reason we have been married 25 years. There can only be one whack-a-doodle-attention-seeking-adventure-superstar in the house at a time! So, when I race into the living room with my latest proclamation like, “I’M TAKING SQUARE DANCE LESSONS!” He simply stares and knows that it’s not a request for permission. He gets me.
Along with square dance lessons (which was a hoot and I think I am pretty decent), in the past few years my curiosity led me to take comedy improv classes, all kinds of dance classes like jazz, swing, hip hop, and clogging, began solo Girl Camping, wine tasting classes and certification, jewelry making, meditation, not to mention taking the RV Inspector Certification course. I guess that is my adrenaline rush–I like doing something that I have absolutely zero idea what is coming and if I will be any good at it. I love learning!
I am always adding to my list and it evolves each year as I start my fresh new journal in January after the holidays.
However, one list that NEVER changes contains the two things that I do not ever want to try: Skydiving and White Water Rafting.
No, nope, uh-uh, nada, never. I am not the greatest flyer anyway and free-falling is part of that fear. And the rafting adventure that I am referring to is the teeth-clenching, stomach-wrenching, white-knuckle, bodies flinging out of the boat kind. I feel kind of liberated knowing those are my limits and can focus on things my brain craves instead!
Four ideas I am noodling now:
- Design Charcuterie Boards – I mean the really really big ones with all of the beautiful colors and flavors like the ones I follow here by Meg Quinn of Ain’t Too Proud To Meg fame. She is an amazing food stylist! She has tutorials and ideas for all budgets. I think the shopping and planning would be half the fun and then I will stand back and admire my creation with amazement!
- Get Better on Guitar – like “not having to look at sheet music” kind of good. I want to be sitting around the campfire and bust out their requests. I have played off and on since childhood and am nowhere closer to this dream. Lessons will have to be the recipe–I need accountability and structure on this one!
- Harmonize – I absolutely love listening to groups like Infinity’s Song and Pentatonix. I am obsessed with Bluegrass harmonies, too. I can usually pick out one key and follow along, however, I have no idea what that key is or how to pick out others. I really want to understand it all and add some spunk to the campfire sing-a-longs!
- Acting Classes – I secretly think that I missed my calling after Mrs. Stroup cast me as the lead in the 4th grade play at Grissom Elementary, which was a male role and I beat out other 9-year-old boys for the position. Clearly, I had a gift, right? Or sounded/looked like a boy? In truth, I am fascinated with the nuances of acting, the body language, facial expressions, and cadences of line delivery. PS: I just made all of that up, I have no idea if that is what it’s really called. I tell my husband that I might become a “mature” commercial actress when I retire. I know that it’s a skill and a talent that takes some serious focus and I would be sooooo up to that challenge!
I’ll keep you posted when I take the next leap of faith on one of the above. Have you taken on any new hobbies or adventure seeking lately? Do you have some dreams that are rolling around in your right brain? You know that saying them out loud is part of the process, so please share them with me in the comments–I can’t wait to hear!
